What's the difference between the levels?

Each level matches a real stage of growing a tax business — from filing your first season (Freshman) all the way to hosting your own network of preparers as a Service Bureau. As you move up, you gain more independence, more fee retention, and more tools for managing a team.

Do I need a PTIN or EFIN to get started?

Not at the entry level — Freshman doesn't require a PTIN. Sophomore and Junior require a PTIN (Preparer Tax Identification Number, issued by the IRS). Senior requires your own EFIN (Electronic Filing Identification Number), since at that level you're filing under your own credentials. We'll walk you through applying for either if you don't already have one.

How much of my tax preparation fees do I keep?

Fee retention increases as you move up levels. Exact percentages by level are confirmed at sign-up — ask your onboarding contact for the current breakdown for the level you're choosing.

Can I upgrade my level later?

Yes. Most partners start at the level that matches where they are today and move up as their client base and confidence grow. Upgrading doesn't mean starting over — your training and account carry forward.

What if I've never used tax software before?

That's what the Freshman level is built for. You'll get step-by-step software training and a preparer you can call when a return doesn't look right — you're not left to figure it out alone.

What does becoming a Service Bureau actually involve?

At the Service Bureau level, you're not just filing returns — you're hosting and supporting other preparers under your own business. That includes transmitter tools, downline reporting, and a signed bureau agreement outlining how that structure works.
